I love a good teenage coming-of-age, especially one set in 1987. Adventureland maintained an awesome retro aesthetic amidst its amusement park backdrop and 80s fashion (although it seemed a bit early 80s for ’87), and I think Kristen Stewart plays the tortured girl-to-fall-in-love-with-one-summer to a tee, but overall, the movie fell flat. They were in or out of college, yet were playing a storyline better suited for teenagers. It was almost as if they were written older so they could drink legally (?), but it didn’t gel.
Look for the unreal outfits of dancing queen Lisa P and keep an ear out for a few choice one-liners from Joel and sweetly elitist misconceptions from James. Otherwise, wait for it on iTunes
