Guess what, folks – it’s NOT Mexican Independence Day today. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the longshot victory of the Mexican army over the French in the Battle of La Puebla in 1862. Today, the holiday is celebrated only in the region of La Puebla and New York’s Bleecker Street bars, and is only slightly recognized in other parts of Mexico.
That said, meet me in the Village for $5 Ricky’s at Diablo Royale (beer margaritas). Delicioso!
